As the year 2016 has passed, many innovations in the field of technology have happened. Pokémon Go swept the nation. Augmented reality and virtual reality reached new heights. Automated home appliances and vehicles spread massively. Finally, new smartphones were released. Some of the new phones are the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, the Google Pixel and Pixel XL, and Huawei P10.

Let’s start with the iPhones. All this information has been collected through exploration of the iPhone 7 page on Apple’s website. As usual, the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus have gained a lot of attention from people around the world. There have been no major changes in the overall look of the phones, although iPhone 7 is slightly thinner compared to the previous version. However, some major design are present. The most significant changes of the iPhone 7 are the removal of the 3.5 mm headphone jack, and the redesigned home button. The 3.5 mm headphone jack has been removed and in its place are stereo speakers. Apple will provide an adapter/dongle that enables you to use your headphones with a 3.5 mm plug. They also provide a lightning connector version of their standard earphones. The home button is now replaced with a sensor in the shape of the home button, that is “an advanced solid-state button designed to be durable, responsive, and pressure sensitive.” (iPhone 7). Apple has also finally moved into the market of waterproofed phone with both phones. The iPhones are iP67 waterproof. According to an article on CNet, “…the rating of iP67, [means that the phones] can be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for a maximum of 30 minutes, but anything over that may cause permanent damage to the phone”(Orellana). A new addition to the phone is also the redesigned camera. Firstly, on the iPhone 7, the camera on the back of the phone is now 12 megapixels, while the camera on the front is now 7 megapixels. The camera also features optical image stabilization, which, “reduce[s] blur associated with motion and handshake. A sensor helps the lens counteract even the tiniest movement, allowing for up to 3x longer exposure compared to iPhone 6s”(iPhone 7). All these improvements to the camera allow the phone to shoot 4K videos and shoot slow motion videos in 1080p.

The iPhone 7 website also expands on the iPhone 7 Plus dual-camera system on the back of the phone which consists of one wide-angle lens and one telephoto lens. The system allows you to switch between lenses which allows for 2x optical zoom. As for digital zoom, the standard camera allows zoom to 6x, while the other camera allows zoom to 10x. The new Retina HD display makes the iPhone 25% brighter and also integrates Apple’s new feature, 3D Touch(iPhone). According to Adhiya, 3D Touch is Apple’s next version of their force touch technology which, “distinguishes between different levels of force applied to the device”, and 3D touch takes the “force touch technology” to a new level by making it more responsive and allowing for new features such as, “peek and pop”(Adhiya). The impressive features aren’t all on the outside though.

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus both contain the new A10 fusion chip. Apple claims that this is, “The most powerful chip ever in a smartphone”(iPhone). The new chip also allows the phones to be two times faster than the iPhone 6s. In addition, the new phones also have more battery life, the longest ever in an iPhone. Now, onto the interface. The standard software that the phones come with is iOS 10. These features make up one of the most anticipated phones in all time.

Now, onto the Google Pixel and Pixel XL. The last phones that Google released were part of the Nexus name and were developed in partnership with HTC. Now, Google is releasing their new product line of phones developed by themselves under the name “Pixel”. Like before, the following information was collected through the exploration of the Pixel page on the Made By Google website: The first additions to this line are the Pixel and the Pixel XL. Like the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, the Pixel and Pixel XL vary in size. The Pixel is a 5” phone and the Pixel XL is a 5.5” phone. Although the phones might not look like a competition to the iPhones, many reviewers go as far as to call it the “iPhone Killer”, and rightly so as the Pixel triumphs in a lot of areas. Like Apple has Siri, the Google Pixel phones use the Google personal assistant as an interface. Like Siri, it can perform various tasks such as; managing everyday tasks, performing google searches, telling you the weather, etc. The Pixel phones also have what Google calls, “The highest rated smartphone camera. Ever.” Some of the features of this camera are a 12.3MP camera on the back, “for sharp, crisp images”, “Large 1.55μm pixels[,] for great shots in any light”, and, “f/2.0 Aperture[,] for bright, even photos”. Unlike the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, both the Pixel and the Pixel XL use a single lens system. The Pixel phones also have unlimited storage because of Google Drive. Like the iPhones, the phones have a fingerprint sensor that is placed on the back for easy unlocking of your device. The Pixels also use a USB-C port instead of Apple’s traditional lightning connecter. In addition, the phones also have an impressive battery life and an even more impressive charging speed. According to Google, the phones, “Get up to 7 hours of battery life in just 15 minutes”. The phones use an Android 7.1 Nougat interface (Made). All these features make the phone a serious contender in the world of smartphones.

Speaking of underdogs, let’s talk about Huawei. Huawei is a name that is not widely known, but is a very important brand to consider when buying a new smartphone. They have released an arsenal of amazing phones in their history and their new phone, the P10, is no exception. The following information is again, taken from the specifications section of the HUAWEI P10 Smartphone website. The P10 is a phone that uses the android interface and has features that make it formidable. The P10 uses a dual camera system similar to the iPhone 7 Plus, and has developed this system in coordination with Leica, an icon in the photography industry. One of the lenses in the dual camera system is 20MP, while the other is lens 12MP. This allows it to have the dual zoom feature that the iPhone 7 Plus has. The good stuff isn’t all on the outside though. “Machine learning and the ultra-fast Kirin 960 processor keep HUAWEI P10’s performance at the peak of its game. Coupled with HUAWEI Ultra Memory technology that intelligently allocates, recycles, and compresses memory, the apps you love load faster than ever” (Huawei). The P10 also features super fast charging. “HUAWEI P10’s high-density 3200 mAH (TYP) battery supports HUAWEI SuperCharge technology. Backed by a 5-gate protection, charging is both fast and safe.” (Huawei). Huawei may be a company that you have never heard of, but it is one that you should definitely consider.

In conclusion, these three smartphones are the ones that you should mainly consider before buying a new smartphone. If you want a Phone that is focused towards photography, then buy the Huawei P10. If you want a phone that is both fast and really efficient, and is able to handle a lot of work, then the Pixel is the phone to buy. On the other hand, the same could be said for the iPhones. If you want a phone that has a really sleek design, looks amazing, and handles a lot of work, then the iPhones are a good choice. I myself would prefer the iPhone as I really like the design, and am a fan of Apple’s smartphones.
